Part 7 – A heart after God

Prayer: Lord this morning I have come to take my place at the table of the Lord.
Father, I thank You for Your Word that is a lamp unto my feet and I thank You for Your Word that is a light unto my path.
Open my spiritual eyes this morning that I might see and understand all that You want to show me.
Write Your Word on my heart and in my mind.
You are the Potter and I am the clay. As the clay, I surrender my life into Your capable hands. Make me and mould me Lord into a vessel of honour for You.
I pray in Jesus name.

One thing that is needed

Mark 14:3-6 – And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. But there were some that were indignant among themselves, and said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil wasted? For it might have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor.’ And they criticized her sharply.
But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me.

Why had she come? She used her fragrant, costly oil to worship Him. Jesus called it a good work.

John 11:1-2 – Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

Of course, we know that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.

Luke 10:39-42 – Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell her to help me.’
And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’

Everything that Martha was concerned with had no eternal value. It had earthly value but it had no eternal value. It would be meaningless in the big scheme of things. But what Mary had chosen? Now that would have eternal value.

One thing that is needed

So often, there are too many distractions that come our way.
Things that we are worried about or troubled by – and they consume the valuable time that we should be using to sit at His feet. It is here at His feet that we will find the place of rest and hear His voice. His wisdom, opening up our spiritual understanding, so that we can come up higher.
Keeping us on the treadmill of life is one of the most effective strategies of the enemy to keep us from knowing Him and the rest that we will find in Him. He wants us to fail.

The great I AM.
My Lord God, You are not just the most wise, the most loving, the best creator – You don’t have wisdom, You ARE Wisdom, You don’t just have the most incredible creative abilities, You ARE the Creator, You ARE Love, You ARE Peace, You ARE Truth, You ARE Righteousness, You ARE Life. You ARE Mercy, You ARE Grace, You ARE All Might and ALL Power. You don’t have life, You are LIFE.

Father, the Lord Jesus was the express image of who You are. He was the embodiment of who You ARE. Through His obedience, He revealed who You are.

The fruit that grows on a tree tells us what the tree is
The fruits of the Spirit are the evidence of who You ARE. By the Holy Spirit, the great I AM is being manifested and revealed through our lives.

One thing is needed and it is all a matter of the heart…
By spending time in His Presence, we become connected to the One who IS LIFE. He IS our abundant life. An encounter with LIFE, imparts Zoe life. Life as God has it. Eternal life. Everlasting life.

David was much like Mary.
This is God the Father’s description of David:

Acts 13:22(b) – ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’

By studying David, the man who was after God’s own heart, we get a better understanding of what that looks like.

Psalm 5:1-3 – Give ear to my words, O Lord. Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray.
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.
V7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy. In fear I will worship toward Your holy temple.

Psalm 24: 3-5 – Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Psalm 25:8-11 – Good and upright is the Lord; therefore, He teaches sinners in the way. The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies. For Your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.
V12-14 Who is the man who fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. He himself shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the earth. The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His Covenant.

Not like show and tell.
Hello, this is My Covenant. You too can have one of these.
No. He shows you by keeping the terms of His Covenant. It will be a real, tangible, manifestation of His promises – in your life!

Psalm 27:4-5 – One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I will seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.

Psalm 28:1-2 – To You I will cry, O Lord my Rock: do not be silent to me, lest, if You are silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.

Psalm 63:1-6 – O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You in a dry and thirsty land, where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory.
Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
When I remember You on my bed, I will meditate on You in the night watches.

Now. It’s our turn.
Prov.4:23 – Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life

When we break down this scripture we see that it’s important to protect and monitor what we allow into our heart because what is in our heart will impact and determine how we live life.

Prov. 23:7 – For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he…

Here again, we see that we will never be more than what we believe about ourselves.
It is important to take note here that we will be what we think in our heart, NOT OUR HEAD!

Rom. 10:9-10 – That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe (where?) in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Therefore, with the heart, one believes…and what we believe (in our heart, not our head) is what we become.

David, the worshiper – the one who understood the majesty and greatness of God sang from his heart what he knew about his God.
Psalm 8 – The glory of the Lord in creation.
Psalm 9:1-2 – I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
Psalm 19 – David extols the majesty and the glory of the Lord.

Psalm 29 – Praise to God in His Holiness and Majesty.
Psalm 33 – The sovereignty of the Lord in Creation and History

David and his songs of thanksgiving for answered prayer.
Psalm 30 – The Blessedness of answered prayer
Psalm 66 – Praise to God for His awesome works

Jesus said, ‘One thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part.’
Now, it’s our turn… You and I MUST understand and KNOW the majesty of God. It is the spiritual fount of all true worship.
